One of the most common questions we hear is, "How much does getting a tattoo hurt?" The honest answer is that every tattoo involves some level of discomfort, but most people find it much more manageable than they expected, and it very rarely puts them off coming back for more!

Pain is different for everyone and can vary depending on several factors, including where you're being tattooed, the size of the design, and your own pain tolerance. Getting a tattoo is an exciting journey. It's a chance to express ourselves, to carry meaningful art on our skin forever, and the pain is after all only temporary. However, understanding what to expect can make the experience much more comfortable. Let's explore the ins and outs of tattoo pain, what influences it, and how to prepare for your session.

Which Areas Hurt the Most and Least?

Generally, tattoos tend to be more uncomfortable on areas where the skin is thinner or closer to bone. Some of the more sensitive areas include:

  • Ribs

  • Spine

  • Feet and ankles

  • Hands and fingers

  • Knees and elbows

  • Sternum and chest

These areas often feel sharper or more intense during the tattooing process.

Areas with more muscle or padding are usually considered more comfortable. These include:

  • Upper arms

  • Forearms

  • Thighs

  • Calves

  • Shoulders

Many people choose one of these areas for their first tattoo.

Ribs and chest can be more painful. Calves and forearms less so.

What Influences Tattoo Pain Levels?

Tattoo pain isn’t a one-size-fits-all experience. Several factors come into play, not just the location of the tattoo, shaping how much discomfort you might feel during your session. Knowing these can help you set realistic expectations and feel more in control.

  • Size and detail of the tattoo: Larger tattoos or those with intricate details take longer to complete, which means longer exposure to the needle.

  • Your pain tolerance: Everyone’s pain threshold is different. What feels intense to one person might be manageable to another.

  • Tattoo artist’s technique: Skilled artists know how to work efficiently and gently, which can reduce pain.

  • Your mental state: Anxiety or stress can heighten pain perception. Staying calm and relaxed helps a lot.

Understanding these factors can help to prepare mentally and physically for the tattoo session ahead.

What Does It Feel Like?

People describe tattooing in different ways. Some compare it to a constant scratching sensation, while others say it feels like a series of tiny pinpricks or a mild burning feeling similar to a nettle sting. Pain is after all subjective, and some people sail through a full day with nary a flinch, and some will feel it intensely even during a 30 minute session. There is no wrong way to feel pain during a tattoo. The important thing to note is that while it's not usually unbearable, it can be a lot, especially during longer sessions, as the skin can become more sensitive, but most clients quickly settle into the sensation.

The truth is the more you panic about the pain of the tattoo before hand, the worse you will feel on the day of the appointment. Never look up horror stories of 'Tattoos Gone Wrong' on the internet - you will just psych yourself out! If you are worried on the day of the tattoo, below are some pointers that might help you out:

Tips to Manage Tattoo Pain During Your Session

We want your tattoo experience to be as comfortable as possible. Here are some practical tips to help manage pain during your session:

  • Eat well beforehand: A good meal stabilises blood sugar and energy levels.

  • Avoid alcohol and caffeine: These can thin your blood and increase sensitivity.

  • Wear comfortable clothing: Make sure your outfit allows easy access to the tattoo area.

  • Focus on the meaning: Reminding ourselves why we want the tattoo can shift attention away from the pain.

  • Communicate with your artist: Don’t hesitate to ask for breaks or let them know if you need to pause.

  • Bring distractions: Music, podcasts or a book to read can be a helpful distraction, as long as it doesn't affect the tattoo artist trying to work - ask if you unsure!

  • Follow aftercare instructions: Proper care reduces irritation and speeds healing, making future sessions less painful.

By preparing well and staying relaxed, you’ll find the pain more manageable than you might expect.

Is It Worth It?

Ask almost anyone with a tattoo if the discomfort was worth it, and you'll probably get the same answer - absolutely. The sensation is temporary, but a well-designed, professionally applied tattoo is something you can enjoy for a lifetime. There might be moments of discomfort, but that's part of what makes the experience. Always remember that the pain is temporary, but the tattoo is forever.

At Bushido Tattoo, we'll guide you through the entire process and make sure you're as comfortable as possible throughout your appointment. If you're feeling nervous or have questions about pain, don't hesitate to ask. We're always happy to explain what to expect and help put your mind at ease. We hope this guide helps you feel more prepared and excited about your tattoo experience. Get in touch to discuss booking your next (or first!) tattoo.
